The University of Alabama Percussion Ensemble Presents:
Fear/Release
About Fear/Release
The University of Alabama Percussion Ensemble’s debut album, Fear/Release, includes "Pillar VII" by Andy Akiho, "Fear/Release" by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid, "Ta and Clap" by Nico Muhly, "Her Eyes" by Samuel Peruzzolo-Vieira (commissioned by Dr. Lynge), "Amen" by David Curtis (commissioned by Dr. Lynge), and the third movement of the marimba concerto, Djinn, titled "Outdreaming the Genie," by John Psathas, originally composed for orchestra and arranged for percussion ensemble by Dr. Omar Carmenates. The UA Percussion Ensemble was named a winner in the prestigious Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition in 2020 and performed a Showcase Concert at the 2021 Percussive Arts Society International Convention. This is the highest possible honor awarded to a university percussion ensemble. Other than "Pillar VII" by Andy Akiho, the repertoire for this album is the same that was performed at this Showcase Concert. This album will chronicle this milestone achievement made by the UA Percussion Ensemble. The selection of pieces was chosen to highlight the students’ mastery in performing a very diverse program of high-level literature, while also maintaining a cohesive flow throughout. The goal is for the listener to engage with the album from beginning to end, allowing them to fully appreciate a seamless and immersive listening experience. This album was recorded by Paul Oliver, edited, mixed, and mastered by John Will Parks IV, with graphic art by Zach Blessing and photos by Jonathan Whitaker.
